In our Operations Department in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich we offer the following options for motivated students Galileo Operations Support Activities Internship Student Assistance Final Thesis Your Mission The specific tasks of the currently approx. 60 employees of the DLR GfR Operations Department revolve around the secure and reliable operations of the Galileo satellites. Correct functioning of the satellites is essential for optimum satellite navigation. For our activities in ESAC, we are currently looking for an Instrument Operations and Calibration Scientist, to support the operations of the Optical and UV Monitor instrument OM on board XMMNewton. Main responsibilities The OM Instrument Operations and Calibration Scientist works within the Science Operations Centre SOC with responsibilities that may include Acting as interface between the SGS and a certain number of PI Teams, in particular the Optical Monitor OM Team which may require deep knowledge about specific instrument functionality, performance and operations Coordinating of the calibration efforts by the OM ESA IDT and the instrument principal investigator team, the latter being spread across different institutes and universities across Europe Understand the functionality of the OM instrument data to be archived and support the definition of the instruments Archive data products in coordination with the Archive Scientist and in the data pipeline development Organise and maintain uptodate all information concerning the instrument which is deemed necessary for future knowledge preservation Contribute to the SGS preparation activities including definition of operations plans procedures and preparation of training activities Contribute to the maintenance of the overall system, including configuration control and versioning Additionally, the Key Person will be in charge of the following Cooperate with other projects on operational matters e.g. promote the exchange of information with missions where appropriate Calibration of the scientific instruments onboard XMMNewton EPIC, RGS and in particular OM Preparation of instrument calibration activities and analysis of calibration data Preparation and maintenance of Routine Calibration Plan Absolute calibration of the OM instrument Implementation of calibration results into the XMMNewton Current Calibration Files, following the verification of the calibration scientific quality, as well as of standard canned redistribution matrix files for XMMNewton users Contribution to archive release testing or related activities. Ideal candidate The candidate should have a Science PhD or Masters Degree from a recognised Institution of secondary studies and at least 4 years of experience with tasks similar to the ones described above. Additionally, the Key Person should have proved experience in large collaborative projects in an international environment. The candidate must have deep knowledge of astronomical tools and data analysis software. Knowledge of the XMMNewton project and experience in SAS are an important asset. Operations Support Scientist Key Tasks and Responsibilities The Operations Support Scientist works within the XMMNewton Team at ESAESAC with responsibilities that will include Participation to the systematic processing of all scientific mission data as they become available Provision of scientific requirements of the pipeline products Participation in the production and regular updating of the XMMNewton source catalogues Contribute to instrument calibration or scientific performance monitoring within team activities Possibly, development of new algorithms or shared scripts for scientific analysis. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or similar Expertise in astronomical observations, preferably Xray astronomy, to understand the needs and requirements of the XMMNewton community for the planning and implementation of requested observations and to competently deal with community questions on these observations Command of commonly used generic analysis software, like IDL, or Python, and of Xray astronomical data analysis software in particular, with preference to the XMMNewton SAS, FTOOLs and XSPEC or similar, in order to competently interact with and support the community in their use of XMMNewton data Understanding of the tasks in scientific operations support for an international space or ground based observatory. Knowledge of the specifics of astronomical Xray detectors, preferably those of XMMNewton Ability to interact with and provide support to users from a worldwide community and crossing multiple disciplines Fluency in English is mandatory knowledge of another European language is an advantage.
