Verizon to acquire EdgeCast for USD 350 mln - report

(Telecompaper) Verizon is expected to announce the acquisition of CDN provider EdgeCast Networks in a few days, TechCrunch reported, citing sources. The deal could be work more than USD 350 million. Both EdgeCast and Verizon declined to comment on the matter. The deal is seen boosting revenues at Verizon's enterprise division, which would otherwise remain flat over the next year. The buy would also follow Verizon's acquisition of digital media streaming company upLynk a few weeks ago for a reported USD 75 million, as the carrier seeks to provide more ways to stream various types of content over its network.

Box secures USD 100 mln in funding

(Telecompaper) US-based cloud storage service provider Box has announced new partnerships that include USD 100 million investment and commercial agreements. The new strategic partnerships are in line with Box's planned international expansion. The new relationships include commercial agreements and strategic investments from Japanese partners Itochu Technology Ventures, Macnica, and Mitsui USA and MKI, as well as strategic investments from Telefonica Digital and Australian communications provider Telstra. Coatue, DST Global, and existing Box investors also participated.

Altice to acquire Orange Dominicana for USD 1.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Investment fund Altice has agreed to acquire Orange's Dominican Republic unit for around USD 1.4 billion (approximately EUR 1.1 billion). The agreement includes the continued use of the Orange brand by Orange Dominicana within a defined framework. The transaction, which is subject to the approval of the Dominican authorities, will be submitted by Orange Dominicana to the Orange board of directors during the week commencing 9 December. Altice also plans to soon finalize an agreement with Dominican Republic business group Grupo Leon Jimenes to join as local partners on its telecom investments in the Dominican Republic, including Orange Dominicana and Tricom.

Spotify raises USD 250 mln for expansion - report

(Telecompaper) Spotify has secured about USD 250 million in new financing that values the music-streaming company at over USD 4 billion, multiple people familiar with the deal told the Wall Street Journal. The round of funding, led by Silicon Valley firm Technology Crossover Ventures, will help fuel Spotify's expansion to new markets such as Japan. Spotify makes most of its revenue from premium subscriptions; more than 6 million pay up to USD 10 a month. It also has more than 24 million active free users. With Technology Crossover Ventures, Spotify has added an investor familiar with the content licensing business. The investment firm purchased USD 200 million in convertible bonds from Netflix about two years ago. TCV has in the past also invested in real estate website Zillow, Facebook and internet domain registrar GoDaddy. Both Spotify and TCV declined to comment. Spotify last year raised more than USD 100 million from multiple investors at a valuation of slightly more than USD 3 billion. Its backers include Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Russian investment firm DST Global.

Telecom Italia sells Telecom Argentina stake for USD 960 mln

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia has agreed to sell its entire stake in Telecom Argentina to Fintech Group for USD 960 million. The operator confirmed in a statement that Fintech would buy the Telecom Argentina shares held by its units Telecom Italia International, Sofora Telecomunicaciones, Nortel Inversora and Tierra Argentea. The company added that USD 100.5 million of the total corresponds to additional agreements related to the transaction, including an agreement to continue providing the Telecom Argentina companies technical support and other services for up to three years.
