Microsoft to go carbon negative by 2030, start USD 1 bln fund to help carbon reduction worldwide

(Telecompaper) Microsoft has announced a new goal, that it will be carbon negative by 2030. Looking further still, the company also pledges to remove from the environment all the carbon it has ever emitted since its 1975 foundation, either directly or by electrical consumption, by 2050. Microsoft added that it will also help suppliers and customers worldwide reduce their footprints. And to help in this goal, it has set up a new USD 1 billion climate innovation fund to accelerate the development of carbon reduction, capture and removal technologies.

Nigerian Attorney General withdraws USD 2 bln claim against MTN, refers matter to tax and customs offices

(Telecompaper) Nigeria's Attorney General has withdrawn a tax claim of USD 2 billion against MTN and referred the matter to more relevant authorities. MTN Nigeria said that its legal council had received a letter dated 08 January stating that after careful review and due consultation with relevant statutory agencies, the Attorney General had decided to refer the matter to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and Nigeria Customs (NC), with a view to them resolving the issues.

CenturyLink fined USD 9 mln in Minnesota for overcharging customers

(Telecompaper) After paying USD 4 million to the state of Oregon and EUR 6.1 million to the state of Washington, CenturyLink has now agreed to pay USD 8.9 million to the state of Minnesota, settling accusations it overcharged customers. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said the company has also agreed to make "significant" billing reforms, including the disclosure of true prices, to honour all prices and discounts as promised, and to stop all "sham" internet fees.

FCC to vote end-January on USD 20 billion rural broadband fund

(Telecompaper) The FCC will vote later this month on plans to offer operators up to USD 20.4 billion to improve broadband services in rural areas. Chairman Ajit Pai confirmed the plan for the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund has been sent to commissioners for consideration and a vote will be held at the 30 January meeting.
TiVo launches USD 50 streaming box, to partner with Sling, pay-TV operators

(Telecompaper) TiVo announced a new entry-level streaming device to help users bring together all their streaming apps and operators to target broadband-only customers. The TiVo Stream 4K will launch in April at a promotional price of USD 49.99 on Tivo's website and through retailers.
