US apparel imports have sharply risen from India and Vietnam in the first half this year, stagnating from Cambodia and Indonesia where unit prices have significantly increased. China has resisted in volume terms, thanks to lower unit prices in most categories of products, reflecting a structural reliance on Chinese suppliers whatever the level of import tariffs. Our series of statistical tables offer a comprehensive comparison of volume, value, and unit value changes per origin and product category in the first half of 2019. The report also includes a detailed comparison of Chinese price trends vs. other origins, through a series of indexes. Unit value changes in percentage terms and market shares per category, and per origin are also released. Our full table is available for download.

Minimum wages have not changed in the past months, in most low-income countries. They have however been significantly raised where inflation rates have recently rebounded, including in Pakistan or Egypt. Our report displays minimum wages in low-cost apparel manufacturing countries in Asia and Euro-Mediterranean countries, from January 2015 to September 2019, in local currency and US$ terms. A 4-year comparison is available in local currency terms, 2015 US$ terms, and 2019 US$ terms.

US apparel imports from China have recovered in the first half of 2019, far from being depressed by threats of higher tariffs. Unit prices of Chinese cotton apparel have significantly declined, while man-made fiber apparel from China were retaining their competitive advantage. as reflected by our statistical review comparing US apparel imports from China with shipments from Rest of the World (RoW) for every category of products, in volume, value and unit value terms. Historical data cover the first half in the past five years, from 2014-2019.
Central America leads US apparel imports surge in July

The volume of apparel imported into the US saw a double-digit growth surge month-on-month in July as retailers stocked up for the back-to-school season and rushed to bring merchandise into the country ahead of scheduled tariff hikes. Growth in shipment volumes from El Salvador and Honduras was highest during the month, with China also booking double-digit gains but Bangladesh seeing a decline.
