A climate for change: The EPA's limits on emissions are important but not enough
2014-08-27 18:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: THE COUNTRY is about to see its fiercest climate-change battle. After years of congressional inaction, President Obamas Environmental Protection Agency is applying new rules to curb greenhouse-gas emissions from cars, trucks and most controversially power plants, the biggest national emitters. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said he will try to restrict the EPA if Republicans take over the Senate. EPA's New Gas STAR Gold Program As Innovation Incubator
2014-08-14 21:07:21| oilandgasonline Home Page
By Audrey Bold The U.S. EPA rollout of their new gas STAR Gold program to supplement the successful, voluntary natural gas STAR program is an encouraging step towards reducing carbon impact. We knew the agency was planning to announce their new approach to reducing methane emissions, and what we heard in San Antonio at the Natural Gas STAR Annual Implementation Workshop was exciting, as it holds potential for the entire oil and gas value chain. The new EPA gas STAR Gold program will offer an organizing structure through which companies can share best practices for lowering GHG emissions and increasing efficiency. Our team spoke with several energy producers who welcomed the opportunity for this new platform. We share their excitement because this program focuses on what we feel is crucial to the industry: sharing technological advancements that save the industry energy at every level.
What Coal Technologies Will Meet the EPA's New Carbon Rules?
2014-08-14 17:17:50| oilandgasonline Downloads
By Andrea Gains-Germain The EPA’s carbon reduction plan for power plants is getting a lot of press lately. And the mechanical engineer in me makes me think about the actual technology involved. New rules announced this month by the EPA target a 30% reduction in carbon emissions from power plants by 2030 (based on 2005 levels), when the agency estimates that 30% of electricity will come from coal – a downward trend from current levels of 39%. Call it a 30-30-30 picture. If the rules survive legal obstacles, lawmakers will need to resolve an ongoing debate over whether the rule will drive up electricity costs or increase energy efficiency sufficiently to lower electricity bills, a debate that centers around various technological approaches.
