According to statement by John Mitchell, IPC President and CEO, IPC commends the U.S. Senate for passing the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (S. 697). IPC appreciates the bipartisan leadership of U.S. Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Tom Udall (D-NM) for sponsoring this legislation to reform the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, which needs to be modernized to reflect 21st century realities and to help promote innovation and growth.

IPC is applauding U.S. Congress for enacting meaningful tax reform legislation, including making the research and development tax credit permanent. Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act would revive more than 50 temporary tax provisions that expired in 2014, including some important IPC priorities. Bill also includes permanent enhanced expensing for smaller manufacturers, providing annual write-offs of up to $500,000 for investments in equipment and machinery.

In his statement made after U.S. Senate unanimously approved S. 697, Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, SPI president and CEO William R. Carteaux said "S. 697 has the power to truly protect consumers while giving plastics companies reliable ground rules that are based on science." Cartaux specifically lauded "meaningful preemption of state chemical restrictions" and "risk-based approach to regulation" as well as protection of confidential business information.
