The eighth generation of game consoles are only a few months away, and by now, we've learned almost everything there is to know about them. One muddled point, though, just what paywalls will be employed on either console. It would appear that not every online feature is stuck behind PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold.

According to John Carmack, the PS4 and Xbox One hardware is "essentially the same." This comes at an interesting time, as Microsoft has just boosted the Xbox One's GPU to keep up with the PS4's significantly (~50%) more powerful GPU. In the same keynote talk, Carmack makes two other interesting observations: Three or four years ago, he thought that Intel would make a play for the console space with its (now-DOA) Larrabee GPU -- or, alternatively, that the Xbox One and PS4 could easily have been based on "super-mobile architectures", with "16 ARM cores" and "a whole bunch of PowerVR graphics cores."

After the changes the Xbox One has already gone through since its initial reveal, we wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft changed literally anything about the Xbox One. Today, Microsoft confirms that the console's GPU will receive a modest boost in power.

The Xbox One and PS4 have very similar hardware specs. When it comes to the GPUs, however, there's a clear-cut leader: the GPU in the PS4 has 50% higher peak performance than the GPU in the Xbox One. As you probably know, though, peak performance isn't an indicator of real-world frame rate improvements or image quality -- that's why Digital Foundry set out to replicate the Xbox One and PS4, using PC hardware, to see whether the PS4 actually has the edge.
