PS4 will ship without many core features, requires 300MB day-one patch
2013-10-25 20:45:18| Extremetech
Sony has promised a number of outstanding features for its new game console, but today we learned of a substantial catch for early adopters. While features like Remote Play, game broadcast, and play-as-you-download are still slated for the PS4's launch, they will not ship on the first production run. Instead, you'll need to download a 300MB patch on launch day to gain access to a laundry list of promised PS4 features.

The great PS4 vs. Xbox One storage debate: Is 500GB really enough for new games?
2013-10-25 19:59:24| Extremetech
The Xbox One and PS4 both pack 500GB drives, but is that going to be sufficient when measured against the sheer size of game installs?
The PS4 is so powerful that Killzone Shadow Fall was originally 290GB
2013-10-25 16:45:43| Extremetech
The PS3 and Xbox 360 ended this generation neck-and-neck in terms of sales. This is because, in the end, both systems provided a similar gaming experience. Aside from the argument of exclusives, the only major advantage the PS3 really had over the Xbox 360 was the vast storage capacity of Blu-ray discs. This generation, Microsoft caved in, and the Xbox One has adopted Blu-ray. However, Guerrilla Games -- developer of the upcoming Killzone Shadow Fall -- claims that the original build of the game was 290GB in size because the PS4 is powerful enough to build textures that high-res, whereas competing systems are not.

The PS4 DualShock 4 controller almost looked like the Xbox 360 gamepad, says Sony
2013-10-23 21:13:43| Extremetech
The DualShock 4 and Xbox One gamepad have seen a largely positive response from the gaming industry. The issues from the previous generation have been fixed, and it seems we've reached the pinnacle of traditional console-style controllers. It wasn't an easy task, though. Controllers have been evolving over the last thirty-some years, and these latest models required substantial engineering prowess to outshine everything that came before. I'm excited to hold them both in my hands, but I'm left wondering where we can go from here.
PS4 confirmed to ship with easily replaceable 2.5-inch hard drive
2013-10-18 22:26:07| Extremetech
Early on, Sony made it clear that users would have physical access to the 500GB hard drive in the PS4, but the exact details surrounding the process were slim. Now, we have a hands-on confirmation that anyone with the will and a screwdriver can replace the drive inside of Sony's next console. Too bad a 500GB SSD will cost just about as much as the PS4 itself.
