For the location in Garching, near Munich we are looking for a Senior Software Engineer at The European Southern Observatory ESO. Tasks The Pipeline Systems Department in the Directorate of Engineering DoE is developing the Very Large Telescope VLT and Very Large Telescope Inferometer VLTI data reduction pipelines for the operational instruments at La Silla Paranal observatory. The data reduction pipelines are used in two operational environments, by the ESO Data Flow Operations at Garching, and by the Paranal Science Operations PSO, for the quicklook assessment of data, the healthmonitoring of instruments and detectors, the generation of master calibration data, the reduction of scientific exposures, and data Quality control. The Exposure Time Calculators ETC are a suite of Web applications provided for the ESO Call for Proposals. The total usage of the system peaks to about 35 000 simulation runs during the Call for Proposals periods in March and September each year httpwww.eso.orgobservingetc. The work involves Preparation of data reduction procedures for the ESO VLT pipelines Implementation of these parts in ANSIC with the ESOCPL library for information, see www.eso.orgcpl and www.eso.orgpipelines and the HighLevel Data Reduction Library HDRL. Maintenance and development of C and Python ETC Web applications for the VLT and VLT Interferometer VLTI. Essential requirements The ideal consultant is a software engineer with A university degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Minimum 3 years experience in developing scientific data processing applications in ANSIC and C Good knowledge of processing and statistical handling of scientific data Experience in a UnixLinux environment. Ability to participate in any of the maintenance and development efforts in support of ESOs team, contributing to the entire software lifecycle, from analysis to design, coding, documentation and testing, to deployment and maintenance Experience in software development tools version control, development environments, debuggers, profilers Excellent command of the English language and very good communication skills. Ability to interact with the instrument scientists at the operational sites for the specification of data reduction procedures Ability to operate, in collaboration with ESOs team, to also work independently and meet the agreed deadlines. Tasks As a member of the Computer Systems Management team, the key person shall provide support to all Ground Segment Commissioning and Routine Operations. The duties range from the support to the operation of the UNIXbased ground segment facilities, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. Concerning working hours, two types of support are required from the key person normal support standby callout support specified in advance on a workpackage basis. Qualifications and Requirements In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, the key person shall have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements.
