Package description Full details on application Main responsibilities Overview Within the ESA Sensors Performance, Products and Algorithms SPPA Section the postholder will be included in the Swarm Data Innovation and Science Cluster DISC contractual framework. The postholder will be supporting the data quality assessment of the Swarm different instruments, taken from a subset of Electric Field Instrument EFI, composed by a Thermal Ion Imager TII and two Langmuir Probes LP and the magnetic field instruments, composed by an Absolute Scalar Magnetometer ASM and a Vector Field Magnetometer VFM. The required expertise shall be related to geomagnetic field and or space plasma physics magnetospheric and ionospheric physics, solar wind the related instruments Scalar and Vector Magnetometers, Langmuir probes, thermal ion imagers, electrostatic analysers the algorithms and theory underneath the processing of data. Expertise on related scientific research and also on the utilisation of ground based equipment for magnetic field measurements or plasma both Incoherent and Coherent Scatter Radars, Ionosondes and Digisondes, AllSky Cameras would also be valuable. Location ECSAT, Harwell, United Kingdom Our team and mission The overall goal of the ESA Climate Office is to expand awareness, use and scientific impact of Earth Observation EO data records, especially from ESA satellites, by working with the international climate research and modelling communities. This is achieved through the following lines of activities Implementation of the Climate Change Initiative programme CCIcci.esa.int, that aims to develop a lasting and structured dialogue with climate research and modelling communities worldwide, analysing their needs for longterm satellitebased observations of the climate system, as expressed via the Global Climate Observing System GCOS, and assessing their feedback on available EO data records Translating these needs into technical performance specifications for Fundamental Climate Data Records FCDR and Essential Climate Variables ECV based on the complete ESA EO satellite archives, taking due care to account for the nature of different satellites Initiating and managing a suite of scientific analyses, data exploitation and system development activities to enhance ESAs capability to generate these records for climate research, modelling, attribution, projection, prediction, trend assessment, and data assimilation, as well as validation of the data sets with the corresponding scientific users.
