Google buys Swedish site to build data centre

(Telecompaper) Avesta borough council in Dalarna county said that Google has acquired a 109 hectare property in Horndal but said it understands that the company has no plans to build there yet. Avesta council gave a link to an article on Dagens Nyheter's website, which said the company had given the newspaper confirmation that it planned to build a data centre there.

Vodafone launches gigabit LTE in Germany

(Telecompaper) Vodafone Germany announced the launch of the first mobile base stations supporting speeds of 1 Gbps. The top speed is available initially in Duesseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin and Hanover, and Vodafone said it will soon offer smartphones supporting 1 Gbps LTE. All customers with LTE tariffs can access the new speed.

Samsung unveils first consumer smart tag for NB-IoT

(Telecompaper) Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of what it claims to be the first consumer smart tag that uses narrowband network technology (NB-IoT, Cat.M1) for tracking pets, children and personal items. The Samsung Connect Tag works with GPS, Wi-Fi-based positioning (WPS) and Cell ID to receive accurate location information both indoors and outdoors, said the company, adding that the 4.2cm wide and 1.2cm thick device is also IP68 water and dust-proof.

TIM launches first Italian commercial NB-IoT service in 5,000 localities

(Telecompaper) Telecom Italia (TIM) has announced the imminent launch of a Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) service in 5,000 localities all over Italy, equivalent to 75 percent of its network. The company said it will be the first Italian operator to offer the commercial IoT service based on LTE technology at the end of October, with the roll-out of narrowband technology set to be completed by January.

Oi bondholders reject revised restructuring plan

(Telecompaper) The major creditors of Brazilian operator Oi have reject the revised debt restructuring plan proposed by the company. According to the steering committees of the ad hoc group of Oi bondholders and the International Bondholder Committee, Oi's management and board have put forward a restructuring proposal that "appears to be driven by the objective of protecting and enhancing the interests of existing shareholders, to the detriment of the best interests of the company and other stakeholders". The plan, in the best case scenario, would result in a company that is not viable or sustainable, they said.
