MTN sells Cyprus unit to Monaco Telecom for EUR 260 mln

(Telecompaper) MTN Group has agreed to sell its Cyprus unit to Monaco Telecom for about EUR 260 million. MTN Cyprus is MTN's only operating business in the EU, and was acquired as part of MTN Group's acquisition of telecoms holding company Investcom in 2006. It falls outside the group's core footprint of Africa and the Middle East.

US lifts ban on sales to ZTE after USD 1.4 bln in fines

(Telecompaper) ZTE has resumed operations after the US government lifted a ban on sales to the Chinese company. ZTE paid a USD 1 billion fine last month and deposited another USD 400 million in escrow, the Department of Commerce confirmed, in order to put an end to the order denying US companies to sell to the company.

(Telecompaper) Satellite shares were particularly strong last week, anticipating 5G-related windfalls from spectrum holdings in the US: Intelsat (+17%), SES (+15%), Inmarsat (+9.3%), Eutelsat (+4.5%) and also Iridium (+7.3%). The weakest shares included Turk Telekom (-16%) and Turkcell (-13%), as well as Finnish Elisa (-10%) reporting on Q2, leaving investors disappointed in the reported growth.

ZTE sees CNY 7-9 bln loss in H1 after US ban

(Telecompaper) ZTE said it expects its net result for the first half of this year to sink to a loss of CNY 7-9 billion from a profit the year before of CNY 2.29 billion, a decline of 405-492 percent. The preliminary basic loss per share is seen at CNY 1.67-2.15 from earnings of 0.55. ZTE attributed the sharp declines to the suspension of its operating activities as a result of the export ban imposed by the US government on the Chinese company.
