The Instrument Science group has a vacancy for a Senior Research Scientist fm Vacancy 1341 Job summary The successful candidate will lead all technical aspects of future space optical and farinfrared instrument development all the way up to launch, take the lead in the instrument design, and will be the technical point of contact both for the internal team as well as for the international instrument consortium. Candidate will act as lead instrument scientist of the instrument, and is in charge of monitoring the overall endtoend performance of the instrument. Tasks Lead the development of all aspects of innovative, international and multidisciplinary spacebased optical instruments including optical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal designs Acquire funds for largescale projects Develop and give advice on current and future innovative space instrument proposals Lead a team of experts Build up and maintain an international network in the area of optical and infrared space instrumentation. Required qualifications PhD in Physics or Optics or equivalent in a discipline related to remote sensing e.g. Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy 5 years of experience in developing innovative opticalinfrared instrumentation Considerable national and international reputation and experience as a researcher in the own discipline Experience in a Lead System Engineer role and in writing proposals Good verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment Experience with project management techniques Prince II, IPMA or equivalent Innovative, Persuasive, Helicopter view. About GIM In the context of the expansion of its activities in Earth Observation EO, GIM is looking for a senior remote sensing expert to strengthen its team. For several years GIM has been developing operational services deriving specific information from time series of very high resolution optical satellite images to support business activities of customers in the precision farming and agroforestry applications areas. In this framework GIM has been developing innovative image processing chains and is currently focussing on their automation. GIM is thus looking to appoint an enthusiastic senior selfstarter to support its EO team in meeting these research challenges. This position, based in Heverlee Belgium, calls for at least 5 years of practical experience in satellite image processing and workflows development. The successful candidate will have a high potential to be recognised as an expert and resource person in the remote sensing field. He will be capable of bringing scientific and technical innovation in the EO team and of supporting and supervising his colleagues. He will report to the Team Manager. Job description The main working language is English as most of the activities will be realised in the framework of European research projects e.g. funded by ESA, FP7 or directly by the clients.
