Fracking the USA: New Map Shows 1 Million Oil, Gas Wells

2014-03-27 21:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: If you're wondering where oil and gas production and hydraulic fracturing are happening near you, FracTracker has a new mapping tool that will help you find out. Areas where America's 1.1 million oil and gas wells, both conventional and hydraulically fractured, are found are highlighted in orange. Texas, where many of the wells are concentrated, is excluded because FracTracker was unable to publish data from the state. Researchers at FracTracker, an independent oil and gas research group that...

Regulations Must Keep Pace with Water-Related Fracking Risks

2014-03-27 07:17:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Energy Collective: To mark this years World Water Day, UNESCO and UN Water released the 2014 World Water Development report highlighting the key role that water and energy play in economic development. According to the report, some 768 million people do not have access to an improved source of water, while 2.5 billion people do not have access to adequate sanitation. To assume, however, that people living in developed countries are somehow exempt from legitimate concerns about the safety and quality of their water...

Pennsylvania Fracking Activist Wants Back on Driller's Land

2014-03-26 05:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Associated Press: A high-profile anti-fracking activist who often gives tours of natural gas drilling sites in northeastern Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale region asked a judge Monday for relief from an order barring her from stepping foot on more than 300 square miles of land owned or leased by one of the state's leading natural gas drillers. Vera Scroggins said the injunction, in place since October, has effectively prevented her from traveling to her favorite grocery store, eye doctor, hospital, restaurants,...

United Kingdom: Fracking won't crack our dependence on Russian gas imports

2014-03-25 12:34:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: As tensions with Russia intensify, government ministers and conservative commentators have increasingly sought to capitalise on the crisis to sell fracking to the electorate. Over the weekend, Conservative energy minister Michael Fallon argued that the UK should reduce its reliance on gas imports by fracking for shale gas in the UK. The foreign minister, William Hague, wrote in the Telegraph that we need to "develop indigenous European energy supplies such as shale gas", while commentators including...

Researchers find fracking safety data is sparse across Europe

2014-03-25 12:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Blue and Green: A study from independent research consortium Researching Fracking in Europe (ReFINE) has found that data looking at the risks of leaking shale gas wells is sparse. It says current numbers show huge disparity in the safety of such wells. The study, published in Marine and Petroleum Geology, found that previous research of oil and gas wells that were drilled over the last 100 years reveal highly variable well barrier and well integrity failure rates, ranging from 1.9% to 75%. The researchers...
