LSE Space is looking for an experienced Engineer mf in order to fulfill the duty as EPSSG EndtoEnd Instrument Chains Support at EUMETSAT in DarmstadtGermany. TASKS Your activities will be related to overall System aspects for endtoend instrument chains, i.e. involving the space segment satellites as well as the ground segment, the latter consisting of the data acquisition systems, monitoring and control systems, data processing facilities and product dissemination facilities. You will typically provide support for the following tasks contributing directly to the tasks andor following up work done in other teams Mission performances Identification of contributors to performances radiometric spectral geometric allocation apportionment to elements of the instrument chains. Definition of approach for performance modelling review of adequacy of related modelling tools. Compilation and analysis of endtoend performance budgets, as needed collecting input from space and ground segment studies cross check against applicable requirements. Processing chains Definition of overall approach for the development, verification and validation VV of the processing chains as part of the overall EPSSG System. Identification of implications of processing concepts for System ground segment requirements, architecture and design. Identification of required tools and test data for the development and VV of the processing chains as relevant generation of technical documents to support tool development procurement. Support for the development of relevant tools and the generation of required test data sets. Following up of validation of processing algorithms and of verification of processing chains in the ground segment as relevant for System VV of the endtoend instrument chains. Instrument calibration product validation Analysis of the implications of instrument calibration concepts for the System and ground segment and specifically for onground data processing. Support for the definition of the required infrastructure to perform tuning maintenance of calibration data and to validate generated products. In addition you will be involved in some more general tasks Regular review of System level documentation dealing with requirements, system concepts, architecture and design, technical analyses, to identify information of importance for endtoend instrument chains. In addition, and with the same aim, analysis of documents provided by other teams in EUMETSAT and by external partners. Support for coordination of interdisciplinary meetings of relevance for the instrument chains. Support for the preparation of documentation for System level reviews, during the covered period mainly the System Requirements Review and the Preliminary Design Review. PROFILE You shall have the following experience and background University degree in the domain of engineering, science, or equivalent. At least 5 years of experience in the field of engineering of space andor ground systems, in the area of Earth observation from space. At least 5 years of direct involvement in the development of relevant instruments EPSSG satellites will embark sounders and imagers from the ultraviolet to the microwave range, a scatterometer and a radiooccultation instrument andor the related onground processing chain, with an indepth understanding of mutual implications. Good overall knowledge of instruments, the platform environment, processing algorithms, ground segment environment, to the extent relevant for endtoend instrument chains. Demonstrated ability to perform analyses of a System combined space and ground segment top down and to perform syntheses and compile technical budgets bottom up. Description The activities for this consultancy will focus on defining and maintaining the EPSSG system development logic, schedule and all subsystem interactions. The EPSSG system covers the space segment satellite and instruments, ground segment, satellite application facilities, launcher service and LEOP service, as well as the corresponding operations preparation activities. Satellite development is carried out under ESA responsibility but must be coordinated with all other EUMETSAT developments, and all of its interactions with the rest of the system will be defined as part of this activity. The activities require one key person for the duration of the consultancy contract. The tasks and responsibilities of the key person to be undertaken during the EPSSG Phase B will typically include the following Define a system development logic covering all system elements, up to the time of the handover of the last satellite to the Operations Department Prepare and maintain a detailed system development schedule in coordination with all subsystems and partners, together with a critical path analysis of each version of the schedule Identify all interactions between subsystems and partners, and associate them with main system development milestones and the program work breakdown structure Provide inputs to the sections of the System Development Plan concerning system development logic, schedule and interactions Put into place a database of all interactions allowing their subsequent management Prepare and maintain Interactions Documents defining all interactions between subsystems, together with their need dates. Interactions will cover such areas as o Deliverables hardware, software, databases, documentation, algorithms, test data sets, tools, configuration statuses o Support mutual review support, joint test and operational rehearsals preparation and execution, test data analyses o Access to services, sites, facilities, infrastructure and interfaces Follow up all subsystem developments and participate in any necessary meetings and reviews Track progress against agreed development plans and Interaction Documents and signal any likely or identified deviations from these plans, together with proposals to reduce the impact of any delays Provide regular summary reports on system development progress against the development schedule and the status of interactions These activities will involve interactions with other EUMETSAT teams. Travel within Europe, to the United States and possibly other parts of the world may have to be undertaken for certain tasks. Profile The key person shall have the following experience and background University degree in the domain of engineering, science, or equivalent At least 5 years of experience in the field of largescale system development Demonstrated ability to define system development logic and schedules and successfully implement them Proficiency with MSProject Demonstrated experience of defining system interactions and successfully implementing them in a large project The following experience would be additional assets Experience of large space systems development. At least 5 years of general experience with the development of onground processing of data from satellite instruments for Earth observation. At least 5 years of direct involvement in VV activities for instrument processing chains, including production of test tools and of test data. At least 5 years of experience with software specification, design and development and relevant standards. Very good skills in higher programming languages, such as Fortran, CC, Java. You shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan your work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. You shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important.
