NTSB wants to improve trucking, rail, pilot safety

The National Transportation Safety Board wants to drastically improve safety in the nation's commercial trucking industry and require that people with medical conditions be deemed medically fit for duty before they can operate vehicles. It also wants to improve rail tank car safety and work to ensure that pilots, crews, operators and other develop and follow effective procedures and training.

President Obama is nominating a transportation safety and human fatigue expert to revive the troubled agency charged with keeping the nation's highways safe. Mark Rosekind, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, still must be confirmed by the Senate before he can take over the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

At a board meeting Tuesday, the group unveiled the findings of its investigation into the early-morning crash of UPS 1354 just short of the runway at BHM. Captain Cerea Beal Jr. and First Officer Shanda Fanning were killed in the crash.
