This is an opportunity to provide a Spacecraft Operations Engineering service within the GAIA Flight Control Team. The successful candidate shall be assigned a primary area of responsibility, such as Payload or Platform subsystems and also be expected to take on additional areas of responsibility for other Ground Segment elements. This position is based at ESOC in Darmstadt. It is fulltime and permanent and expected starting date will be around September 2019. We are looking forward to meeting you! ResponsibilitiesDuties The GAIA Spacecraft Operations Engineer will initially be assigned to a particular mission GAIA within the Astronomical and Fundamental Physics Missions family. Main Responsibilities The successful candidates should concentrate their activities on the following Operate on a 247 shift basis all or part of the mission control system, which includes parts of the ground segment as well as the space segment Assist in configuring and testing the operational system to support the operations In case of ground or space segment anomaly take corrective action as necessary, applying the contingency emergency procedures approved for the mission to ensure spacecraft safety and the continuity of service provision to users Participate in other operationsrelated activities small system development, procedures development or maintenance etc. upon request of the Team Leader. The Ideal Candidate The candidates should have a solid background in a technical or electronic environment, to the level of Senior Technician. A formal qualification to ONC or HNC would be advantageous. Ex service personnel should have completed a service College apprenticeship in electronicstelecommunications, and possess a background in Avionics, Air Defence, Air Radar or Communications. Or the candidate should have a degree at least at BSc level in a related subject such as Aerospace Engineering, Telecommunications, Physics etc. Experience working with computer systems and PC literacy is required. Database knowledge would be useful. Candidates must be adaptable, selfdisciplined and able to work in a calm and correct manner under conditions of stress. The position requires working a shift rota candidates must be able to fit in well within a small operations team. Job Description Astroscale is seeking to employ an experienced and motivated Senior Spacecraft RF Communication Systems Engineer at our facility based in Harwell, UK. This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and rapidly growing company seeking to make a positive contribution to the growing problem of orbital debris that endangers mankinds continued use of space as an asset. This role will allow the right candidate to shape solutions for our missions. Whilst the candidate will primarily work in the UK, they will interact extensively with a larger team in Astroscales Japan Office and may expect to be required to travel to Tokyo as needed in support of Astroscale projects and operations. Responsibilities Lead development and design activities for RF Comms subsystems on Astroscale spacecraft derive and maintain subsystem requirements define and develop subsystem architecture perform tradeoff analysis of hardware software solutions developing link budgets define FMECA and FDIR processes Coordinate with other teams at subsystem and at system level to define ConOps, ICDs, development and verification plans. Plan, prepare, lead, conduct subsystems and system level verification tests, including environmental testing. Work with the UK based Ground segment and operations teams in support of our mission operations globally. Interact with partners and suppliers for the provision of RFcomms equipment. Support procurement engineers with specification, tradeoff and selection of RFComms equipment. Participate in review of the deliverables in support of the project milestones. Essential Skills experience Diploma bachelor or master degree in electrical engineering or relevant engineeringscience discipline. 5 years of commercial experience RF design test of highperformance microwave communications systems for satellites. Understanding of RF communications and various modulation techniques. Experience using RF and microwave test equipment VNAs, spectrum analyzers and signal generators and simulation tools. Operational experience of RF systems on spacecraft missions. Experience in developing and conducting test plans for spacecraft avionics. Good understanding of spacecraft mission lifecycle and milestones e.g. MDR, PDR, CDR, etc. Good understanding of system engineering managing requirements through the full project lifecycle. Desired Skills Experience Demonstrable experience of spacecraft design lifecycle at all stages from initial concept to design, test, and operations. Experience of analysis radiation tolerances and knowledge of radiation hardness assurance for Low Earth Orbit applications. Whilst the working language across all Astroscale divisions is English, proficiency in spoken andor written Japanese would be considered an asset.
