Support to Science Operations Herschel at ESAC

A Spanish leader company in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific services with more than 45 years of experience working for NASA and 35 years working for ESA seeks a candidate for a position of System and Software Engineering for Science Operations Support in Herschel, located at ESAC Villafranca MadridSpain. The objective of the service support to be provided is to continue development of the Herschel Science Data Processing system by designing, implementing, maintaining, testing and documenting data analysis modules written in Java and Jython on a Linux platform. This software is developed jointly between ESA, the three Herschel instrument teams and the NASA Herschel Science Center, with ESA coordinating the overall development and providing the framework within which the instrument teams can develop and optimise instrumentspecific data reduction algorithms. Specific tasks beyond generalpurpose software development include Development and maintenance of the Herschel standard product generation and quality control framework. This framework is used for pipeline data processing for all Herschel data Graphical user interface GUI development and maintenance Development and maintenance of the Herschel Interactive Analysis system. This system is used by the astronomical community to exploit Herschel data in detail Development and maintenance of data structures, including accessing them locally and from object oriented and relational databases Development and maintenance of numerical libraries Setting up and providing access to webservices working in the VO context Writing and maintenance of documentation Provision and maintenance of test harnesses Support of the data processing technical assistants when running the operational environment to generate Herschel standard products. Qualifications and Experience A university degree in computer science, physics, electronic engineering, or equivalent. Specific knowledge is required in the following areas At least five years relevant experience in professional software development and software engineering coding Java applications Very good and broad knowledge of Java Good knowledge of GUI development Unix based systems Linux Configuration control system CVS Object Oriented design methods Knowledge of Jython is a strong advantage Experience in HTTP and HTTPS protocols is a strong advantage Experience in socket oriented multiclientserver applications is a strong advantage Experience within a parallel multiprocessing environment is a strong advantage Knowledge of the distributed resource management application API DRMAA is a strong advantage Knowledge of bash scripting is an advantage Knowledge of the FITS file format is an advantage Experience with numerical and astronomical data reduction systems and algorithms is an advantage Experience writing user documentation is an advantage Knowledge of Windows XP and 7 and Macintosh based systems is an advantage Eagerness to embrace new concepts and methods is an advantage Knowledge of data structures is an advantage Knowledge of design patterns is an advantage Knowledge of XML and DocBook is an advantage Experience with Virtual Observatory concepts and software is an advantage Experience in scientificastronomical data reduction systems is an advantage Experience interacting with instrument and calibration scientists and the scientific community would be an advantage. LISA Pathfinder LPF is the technology demonstrator for the LISA mission and its primary goal is to demonstrate the critical technologies needed for LISA. The pay load onboard LPF will consist of the European LISA Technology Package LTP and a contribution provided by the NASAJPL, the Disturbance Reduction SystemDRS. The Science and Technology Operations Centre STOC is the point of interface to the scientific community, and is responsible for the payload scheduling, quicklook data analysis, data processing and archiving. During the operational phase of the mission extensive stays at ESOC Darmstadt, Germany may be needed. Specific tasks requirements for this position 1. Activities during the development phase a STOC system engineering The service to be provided by the Operations Engineer will entail supporting the system engineering activities of the STOC.
