INSA seeks a candidate for a postion of Specific Information Technology Support for Science located at ESAC MadridSpain. Work Package Overview The SREO Computer Support Group CSG is providing computer support to all science operations centres and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. Under this work package service shall be provided to support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. Specific service tasks would include installation, configuration, deployment, integration, monitoring, administration and maintenance of these computer systems, scientific and commercial software installation and administration, data backup and retrieval, interface with IT vendors for quotation, installation and maintenance agreements, users IT support, defining and operating computers operational procedures, hardware inventory tracking. It specifically excludes ESA corporate informatics infrastructure services office automation, network, terminal servers, Lotus Notes, LAN and communications, which are provided and subject to separate Service Level Agreements SLA. The SREO computer environment at ESAC contains a number of computers dedicated to science operations and archive activities. These are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Sun Solaris, Macintoshes, PC for Office Automation activities and some OpenVMS machines. Systems can be physical machines or provided through the department virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. The Computer Support Group is also maintaining the ESAC GRID and Cloud computing environments, used for project data processing, daily science analysis tasks by user. The external GRID computing environment is also connected to the European EGI infrastructure. Specific tasks include UNIX LINUX and SOLARIS, Macintosh and PC System management Installation, configuration, integration and setting up of new machines with appropriate operating systems and layered software Administration and operation management of computer systems Installation and configuration of new disks and other devices and new users accounts. User support mainly scientists and engineers Handle the mail aliases and mail distribution list. Handlingcheckingmodifying all backups. Definition, implementation and maintenance of computer operators procedures Issues of documentation and technical reports GRID related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Grid Engine and EGI UMD GRID middleware infrastructure Support users to adapt their computing tasks to the GRID infrastructure Cloud related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Eucalyptus Cloud middleware Knowledge of other Cloud middleware is an asset Contact with hardware and software suppliers Definition of hardwaresoftware needs and quotation requests for new purchases and maintenance contracts Locking hardware incidents calls and following the call history. Assisting technician when on site. INSA seeks a candidate for a postion of Support to Science Operations Gaia located at ESAC MadridSpain. The Gaia mission is planning to map to microarcsecond accuracy 1 of the stellar population of our galaxy that is around one thousand million objects. Each object will be seen about 100 times over the fiveyear mission. The data reduction of the 100 Terabytes of downlinked data is estimated to require a Petabyte storage system. The processing will be community wide effort performed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC in which ESAC plays a coordination role. The ESAC team is forming Gaias Science Operations Centre SOC and is heavily involved in DPAC especially in the overall architecture and the core processing. The core processing includes initial data treatment and the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution AGIS to solve for the many unknown astrometric parameters. The processing is distributed over five locations and ESAC will form the hub for data exchange via the Main Database. This main database will form the input for all processing and will be augmented with the output of all processing to arrive at a new version. The production of processing software for Gaia has started and will continue through operations to final catalogue production in 2019. The SOC maintains core software as well as receiving packages from external entities to be integrated and run in SOC. For any candidate experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage. The selected person must be willing operate in a team environment and to travel. Good interpersonal and communication skills are an advantage. The person should be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English, one of the official languages of ESA. Specific tasks requirements for this position Work is to be carried out on the core systems provided by SOC including the Main Database and GaiaTools. These are large bodies of code and the chosen candidate will be required to quickly come to grips with the code base and implement big fixes and enhancements. The chosen language for the Gaia Core processing is Java and requires candidates to possess strong Java skills. Knowledge and experience in at least some of the following is essential large DBMS, distributed processing, numerical and statistical techniques. The candidate should be aware of required documentation for a large project. Experience working with large data volumes, ICDs, data dictionaries would be an asset.A scientific background is a strong advantage. Scope The activities for this consultancy will include scientific aspects related to the development of the product processing facilities of the EPSSG ground segment. The consultant will work in a matrix structure providing crossdivisional support and be hosted in the Remote Sensing and Products Division of the Technical and Science Support Department. The consultant will work at EUMETSAT Headquarters, located in Darmstadt, Germany. The tasks and responsibilities will include Preparation of algorithm theoretical basis documents for the generation of level 1 and selected level 2 products Preparation of product generation specifications for the product processing facilities Prototyping of product generation functions Generation of product contents specifications Preparation of test data Preparation of initial calibrationvalidation plans Contribution to the generation of performance budgets Conduct of internal studies related to mission requirements refinements Assessment of results from external studies Contribution to the initiation of scientific support studies System meetings and activities of instrument functional chain teams Participation in reviews.
