Venus Express Science Operations Support Key Tasks and Responsibilities As part of the Venus Express science operations team at ESAC you will have the following mission planning responsibilities Support the Project Scientist in the coordination of the Principal Investigator PI teams in the definition of the science goals and their mapping to the operations Collection and consolidation of the measurements the PI teams want to perform Derive observation sequences from the requests provided by the PI teams Ensure that the planning software used for VEX EPS, PTB, MAPPS is compatible with the requirements of the VEX mission Using the Experiment Planning System EPS and PTB software, develop a proposal for a schedule of observations for the complete mission Collect the short and mediumterm planning input from the PI teams Using the EPSPTB and MAPPS software tools, check the PI input for correctness Where required, support specific PI teams in the generation of their MTP level products Forward the consolidated operational requests to the VEX Science Operations Centre VMOC in the form of Pointing Requests PTR and Payload Operational Request POR files Iterate, if required, the operational requests with the VMOC and the PI teams. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent in space engineering, planetary science or a related field Experience with ESA science missions and interaction with PI teams Familiarity with Venus Express Science Operations and Planning Good knowledge of geometrical constraints for planning of spacecraft pointing Experience with EPS and MAPPS software tools Familiarity with the format of operational request files POR, ITL, PTR files Knowledge of SOLAB Science Operations laboratory, Concurrent Versioning System CVS and SPICE would be an asset Fluency in English is mandatory, knowledge of another European language is an advantage. Description The objective is to lead the efforts to document the Herschel Data Processing system, keeping up with software, product and calibration changes. Documentation covers the Herschel Interactive Processing Environment HIPE offline documentation, online WWW and TWiki documentation, video tutorials and podcasts and the HIPE Twitter. This software and documentation is developed jointly between ESA, the instrument teams and the NASA Herschel Science Centre, with ESA in charge of the overall coordination. The Herschel Data Processing System is distributed to the astronomical community. Specific tasks beyond the general duties of a technical writer are Maintenance and development of HIPE documentation in DocBook. Coordination of Editorial Board activities. Organisation of telecons and facetoface meetings. Liaising with the developer of the help system. Steering and prioritising development according to user needs. Maintenance and development of documentation on the HSC TWiki. This includes documentation aimed at internal developers, other members of the Editorial Board and external users and contributors. Development and maintenance of Known Issues and Whats New pages for each HIPE version. Maintenance of the HIPE Community Wiki. Monitoring and replying to user comments on HIPE documentation pages and Wiki pages. Maintenance of the learnhipe Twitter account. Development of video tutorials and maintenance of the HIPE Academy YouTube channel. Requirements Specific tasks requirements for this position Technical writing, software development and engineering. Specific qualification requirements A university degree in computer science, physics, signal processing, or equivalent. Specific knowledge is required in the following areas At least five years relevant experience in technical writing and software engineering coding Java applications Ability to write clear, concise and correct English. Very good communication and interpersonal skills. Some team leading skills Good knowledge of DocBook. Good knowledge of Java and Jython. Experience writing content for Wikis, in particular TWiki. Experience developing video tutorials. Knowledge of video recording software such as Camtasia Studio Working knowledge of CVS. XSCS subsystems comprise o SCOS 2000 based downlink subsystems PMS, ODS and QLA o Non SCOS 2000 based uplink subsystems HRPSXRPSPHS SGS o Non SCOS 2000 based service subsystems AMS, XFTS and DTS Migration of the XSCS subsystems to Solaris Virtual Machines o Migration of the Solaris8 based subsystems to Solaris10 based Virtual Machines. Data Processing of the XMMNewton Data, including o Raw TM handling and maintenance, including TCX generation and Long Term Archive Trend Analysis. o ODF generation and supervision o Qcheck support and maintenance with evaluation of results. o Supervision of ODF Reprocessing. o In general, support and coordination of overall Science Products Generation. Operations Support, including o Support to the Instrument Operations Manager. o Support of activities related to routine payload operations preparation, execution and evaluation. o Support to the On Board Instrument Software activities. Quality Assurance, including o Configuration Control support activities and Documentation Management CCB issues handling. Maintenance tasks will include both first and second line maintenance. The incumbent holder will keep a strong interaction with the XSCS users on what concerns the daily operations of the XSCS systems. Maintenance activities include the setup and run support to the several chains where XSCS is installed Operational, Reprocessing, Validation, Development and AO Chains. Qualifications University degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields. Background in a scientific discipline is desirable. Required knowledge Experience with ESAs operational systems SCOS is highly desirable. JOB DESCRIPTION Gaia is a major astrophysics mission within the ESA science programme. A large and active scientific community is deeply involved in the preparatory tasks for the mission, in particular for the data processing and analysis tasks. These tasks are the responsibility of the scientific community, organized under the umbrella of the Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC. This consortium consists of more than 400 active scientists and engineers making significant contributions to the preparations for the ultimate product of the Gaia mission the Gaia catalogue. The Project Scientist is responsible for all scientific aspects of the mission. A small team of scientists assists him in this task. One aspect is the support of DPAC activities through the provision of essential information services, ensuring access to ESA provided resources, maintaining a current and archive document system, and ensuring effective information flow between all parties involved. This support will be the primary concern of the candidate. The candidate will be a member of the Gaia Project Scientists Support Team based in RSSD at ESTEC. The role of the team is to support and advise the Gaia project team, the Gaia Science Operation Centre team at ESAC and the Data Processing andAnalysis Consortium DPAC on all scientific aspects of the mission. Within the team the candidate will be expected to support the daytoday activities of the SOC and DPAC by acting as Information Manager within the team, ensuring access for SOCDPAC to the resources provided by the Project Scientist, supporting activities in the domain of outreach to the Gaia scientific community within the boundaries established by the existing ESA infrastructure.
