Work Package Overview The Instrument Operations Team IOT within the XMMNewton Science Operations Centre SOC at ESAC provides the System and Software Engineering support of the XMMNewton Science Operations Control System XSCS. The IOT also performs the Data Processing of the XMMNewton science data ODFs as well as the support activities in the Science Operations area in close collaboration with the Mission Operations Control Centre MOC located at ESOC and the Science Support Team SST at ESAC. The main activities of this service position should include but are not limited to Software maintenance of the XSCS XMMNewton SOC Control System Subsystems. XSCS subsystems comprise o SCOS 2000 based downlink subsystems PMS, ODS and QLA o Non SCOS 2000 based uplink subsystems HRPSXRPSPHS SGS o Non SCOS 2000 based service subsystems AMS, XFTS and DTS Migration of the XSCS subsystems to Solaris Virtual Machines o Migration of the Solaris8 based subsystems to Solaris10 based Virtual Machines. Data Processing of the XMMNewton Data, including o Raw TM handling and maintenance, including TCX generation and Long Term Archive Trend Analysis. o ODF generation and supervision o Qcheck support and maintenance with evaluation of results. o Supervision of ODF Reprocessing. o In general, support and coordination of overall Science Products Generation. Operations Support, including o Support to the Instrument Operations Manager. o Support of activities related to routine payload operations preparation, execution and evaluation. o Support to the On Board Instrument Software activities. Quality Assurance, including o Configuration Control support activities and Documentation Management CCB issues handling. Maintenance tasks will include both first and second line maintenance. The incumbent holder will keep a strong interaction with the XSCS users on what concerns the daily operations of the XSCS systems. Maintenance activities include the setup and run support to the several chains where XSCS is installed Operational, Reprocessing, Validation, Development and AO Chains. Specific tasks include Experience with ESAs operational systems SCOS is highly desirable. Proven experience in the development andor maintenance of space observatory science control systems is an advantage. The candidate should be open minded and be able to understand the different subsystems as a whole integrated systems. Good system engineering practices are Proven experience on data processing systems for space astronomy missions. Experience with Data Base management tools mostly ORACLE and protocols for information access from SOC systems. Good knowledge of UNIX mostly Solaris and Virtual Operating systems. Experience with the management of TM and subproducts trend analysis, long term archive. Good command of modern programming languages CC, Perl, Tcl, Fortran, . The selected contractor must be willing to operate in an international team environment. Good interpersonal and communication skills are an advantage. Candidates should be systemminded, flexible and able to work as a member of a small interdisciplinary team. The contractor should be comfortable in an international working environment and be fluent in English, one of the official languages of ESA. Gaia Science Operations Support, based at European Space Astronomy Centre, Madrid, Spain Applicants must hold a current valid work permit for Spain or be EU nationals. For our activities in the European Space Agency, we are currently seeking to employ a highly motivated and enthusiastic Space Science Data AnalysisAstronomer to support the Gaia mission. The mission is planning to map to microarcsecond accuracy 1 of the stellar population of our galaxy that is around one thousand million objects. Each object will be seen about 100 times over the fiveyear mission. The data reduction of the 100 Terabytes of downlinked data is estimated to require a Petabyte storage system. The processing will be community wide effort performed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC in which ESAC plays a coordination role. The ESAC team is forming Gaias Science Operations Centre SOC and is heavily involved in DPAC especially in the overall architecture and the core processing. The core processing includes initial data treatment and the Astrometric Global Iterative Solution AGIS to solve for the many unknown astrometric parameters. The processing is distributed over five locations and ESAC will form the hub for data exchange via the Main Database. This main database will form the input for all processing and will be augmented with the output of all processing to arrive at a new version. The production of processing software for Gaia has started and will continue through operations to final catalogue production in 2019. The SOC maintains core software as well as receiving packages from external entities to be integrated and run in SOC. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a University degree, minimum MSc, or equivalent, in computer science or related fields with a educational, or workacquired knowledge, background of astronomyphysics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset Task to be carried out on the core systems provided by SOC, including the Main Database and Gaia Tools, these are large bodies of code and the successful candidate will be required to quickly come to grasp with the code base and implement big fixes and enhancements. Essential Skills The chosen language for the Gaia Core processing is Java, therefore the successful candidates must possess strong Java skills.
