(Telecompaper) The European telecoms sector underperformed the general market in week 36. Iliad and Play suffered double digit losses and not all M&A related news pushed the market towards consolidation. The Italian market remains the embodiment of competition, with all mobile operators beating the promotion drum. Our European Telecoms Services index was up 0.5 percent for the week as a result of a few steep gains, at 1&1 Drillisch, United Internet and Gamma Communications. The EuroStoxx 50 index was up 2.0 percent.

(Telecompaper) Opposition against Sunrise acquiring Liberty Global's Swiss business seems to be rising and it remains to be seen whether the firm will find enough support for the rights issue that it needs for the deal. Telenor launched its tender offer for the remaining shares in Finnish DNA. Play Communications was the biggest winner in week 35 and is also doing very well on a year-to-date basis.

(Telecompaper) Quarterly figures and acquisitions determined the mood in the European telecom sector last week. In the end, the price of the TPSI European Telecom Services index fell by 0.5 percent over week 34, while the EuroStoxx 50 index rose by 0.2 percent. Syn (Vodafone Iceland) was the largest downer with -14 percent, the Italian Tiscali the largest gainer with +21 percent. Apart from these microcaps, the Polish Play (-6.2%) and the Spanish MasMovil (+ 8.8%) were the biggest outliers.

(Telecompaper) The European telecoms services market was led by quarterly results in week 32, along with some relatively minor M&A news. Our stock index was down 1.8 percent for the week, underperforming the EuroStoxx 50 index (-1.3%). Cellnex may have benefitted from news of Arqiva considering a split. BT is continuing its downward path and has now lost 27 percent year-to-date.
