Future Missions Applications Experts MTG and EPSSG

The next generation of geostationary and polar satellites is due to come into operation in the early 2020s. Are you able to support our users and build on their existing experiences as we prepare for these important programmes? EUMETSAT is the European satellite agency for monitoring weather and climate. Bringing together the resources of 30 Member States, we develop and operate a range of satellite systems surveying the atmosphere, ocean and climate that deliver data 24 hours a day. Our data is vital to weather forecasts that protect lives and property, and to monitoring the changing climate. EUMETSAT is now developing the next generation of satellite systems, shaping its longterm future. We have two important opportunities for Future Missions Applications Experts to be based within our User Support and Climate Services Division. One role will focus on future planned applications from Meteosat Third Generation MTG and the second on similar services from EUMETSAT Polar System Second Generation EPSSG. As an expert in the data and planned applications from these programmes, you will lead the engagement with our users, listen to their needs, and inform and advise them on how the new programmes may support these requirements. You will coordinate external and internal activities to prepare users for the future use of data and applications from MTG and EPSSG respectively. During the operational phase you will provide support to users enabling the exploitation of services emanating from these missions. Your main responsibilities will include managing user preparation activities within EUMETSAT and working with feedback on MTG or EPSSG user preparations to enable users to optimise the data and products from these missions. You will plan user events and encourage the exchange of knowledge and experience on the application of next generation mission data between EUMETSAT Member States. Your role will involve engaging with future users at relevant meetings and workshops, and working with internal and external partners to support the provision of user information. You will support the training team and help the education process through contributing to web content on the use of MTG or EPSSG products in operations. As an expert in your particular mission you will respond to user enquiries, sometimes in collaboration with other team experts. You will assist in the evaluation of user uptake on current and future services, identifying areas where usage could be improved and providing management information on user preparedness activities. Along with a University Degree in a relevant discipline, i.e. Meteorology, Atmospheric Science or equivalent, you will have proven skillsexperience in the following An indepth knowledge and understanding of the relative value of satellite observations, and other observations in weather analysis and forecasting applications e.g. nowcasting, Numerical Weather Prediction NWP. For the MTG position specific knowledge of nowcasting and shortrange NWP is a particular advantage experience in managing crossdepartmental projects, including planning, monitoring milestones and documentation, and proactively ensuring timely completion an ability to write and edit relevant user information outputs, and a demonstrated eagerness to share information with users experience in working with or supporting an operational user community, preferably an NMHS an understanding of the specific aspects and constraints of operational data processing environments is an advantage good presentation skills, and proven experience in preparing and delivering presentations to a range of audiences excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to apply these to interactions within a team and between teams influencing skills and the ability to communicate confidently at all levels experience in using satellite products and the related tools available to processvisualise them is an advantage We provide an outstanding working environment in cosmopolitan Darmstadt, the City of Science. Meteosat Third Generation MTG Test Data Development Coordinator

We are ready to start testing the data anticipated from our third generation meteorological satellite system and are looking for you to join our team! Are you inspired by the idea of working in a global operational satellite agency based in the heart of Europe? We are currently developing the Meteosat Third Generation MTG meteorological satellite system in cooperation with the European Space Agency ESA. This is one of our larger future satellite programmes and it is entering a critical phase. This is a unique opportunity to work with our partners in developing and running test schedules to ensure the accurate flow of data from the space to ground segment. You will be working in the MTG System Engineering Team, reporting to the Instrument Functional Chain Team Leader. You will lead the development of the scientific test data needed for ground segment and system testing. Managing this project will be very demanding. You will need to be a strong team player with the ability to coordinate a test schedule and then evaluate its outcomes with your fellow experts. With a strong analytical focus, you will interpret complex data sets and make sound decisions based on the information that you capture. Your duties will involve identifying and planning the production of scientific test data sets. This will require you to procure resources and to manage established service contracts including kickoff and regular progress meetings, delivery reviews, monitoring and reporting. You will also be required to identify critical issues and propose both preventive and corrective measures. Along with a university degree in engineering or a scientifically relevant subject, you should be a collaborative team member with experience in the development, validation and use of scientific test data, preferably in the areas of earth observation or remote sensing. You should have an ability to plan, coordinate and monitor parallel developments of test data, involving scientists and engineers. Experience in the use and development of data formats, especially NetCDF and BUFR would be an advantage as would some experience in the development of software for test data manipulation. A demonstrated experience of a minimum of 5 years in the area of satellite meteorology or satellite data processing, including at least 3 years of experience on onboard and vicarious calibration methods including lunar calibration and the use of pseudo Demonstrate a good working knowledge of statistical techniques and understanding of the concepts of calibration and traceability. Good knowledge of radiative transfer in the solar andor infrared spectral ranges and experience in applying them for surface andor atmospheric applications. Proven experience in the use of data analysis tools, such as MatlabIDL, scripting languages, such as PerlPython and highlevel programming, such as CCFORTRAN in a LinuxUnix environment, and an aptitude to learn further programming languages as required. Proven experience in the specification, development, implementation and maintenance of calibration algorithms also with codevelopers.
