DUTIES The postholder will report to the Head of the Software Product Assurance SPA Section. The Section is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of SPA expertise and standards and for providing support to European Space Agency projects in the area of software product assurance. QUALIFICATIONS Applicants for this post should have a Masters degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, mathematics or software engineering, and experience in at least three of the following areas software product assurance in critical realtime applications, software engineering, software configuration management, dependability assessment of software intensive systems, computeraided software development and maintenance, maturity assessment and auditing. Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills. They should have the ability to work autonomously, effectively and cooperatively in a diverse and international team environment and to define and implement solutions in line with team and individual objectives and project deadlines. In addition, applicants should have good analytical, organisational and reporting skills, a proactive attitude to solving problems and an interest in innovative technologies. Task We are looking for a software engineer to assist our customer in the setup of a Cassandra cluster to store, and allow querying of, timeseries data from the hardware of the ALMA radio telescope in Chile. Readings are stored from 200,000 sensors, at a rate of up to one per second. A test cluster consisting of 6 servers is already in place and our customer needs assistance to improve this cluster, optimise the configuration, understand any issues, and help to draft operational procedures in conjunction with the operations team in Chile. The candidate shold also assist in finding the optimal schema to store the data in a performant, flexible way. A secondary role would be to modify client code for accessing the data. Skills Experience of Cassandra is a must from configuration to schema design. An understanding of lowerlevel issues such as linux and storage configuration is a plus. A logical and thorough way of approaching problems is essential as is the ability to communicate clearly in English. Nicetohave skills include java development, knowledge of Apache Spark Education University degree in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

This is a 6 month fixed term employment position, calling for experience of the Apache Cassandra database management system. You will be placed on assignment based near Munich in Germany. Our client is a 16nation intergovernmental research organisation for astronomy. The main working language is English. The Atacama Large Millimetersubmillimeter Array ALMA, an international partnership of Europe, North America and East Asia in cooperation with the Republic of Chile, is the largest astronomical project in existence. ALMA is a single telescope of revolutionary design, composed of 66 high precision antennas located on the Chajnantor plateau, at 5000 meters altitude in northern Chile. All antennas are now at the ALMA site and the Observatory is transitioning towards fullscale science operations.
