Science Operations Software Engineer for Gaia

We are currently looking for a Science Operations Software Engineer for Gaia to support our customer in Spain. Science Operations Software Engineer for Gaia Key Tasks and Responsibilities In this role you will be working onsite at ESAC as part of the Gaia mission. The Gaia mission is planning to map to microarcsecond accuracy 1 of the stellar population of our galaxy that is around one thousand million objects. The data reduction of the 100 Terabytes of downlinked data is estimated to require a Petabyte storage system. The processing will be a community wide effort performed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium DPAC in which ESAC plays a coordination role. The ESAC team is forming Gaias Science Operations Centre SOC and is heavily involved in the overall architecture and the core processing which is distributed over five locations and ESAC will form the hub for data exchange via the Main Database. You will support ESA in developing science operations systems and tools, including System engineering and architectural design activities, including operating plans and procedures Designing, developing, implementing, testing, deploying, operating and maintaining software tools and systems, eg o observation proposal handling, mission planning and quicklook systems, parts of which may be distributed to the community, o user support tools, o interactive analysis and calibration systems, to be distributed as needed to the community for data reduction and analysis, o data processing pipelines, o Scientific data archives and interfacing these to the virtual observatory. Skills Experience You will have the following qualifications and relevant experience University degree or equivalent in computer science or related fields Strong Java skills Knowledge and experience in at least some of the following is essential large DBMS, distributed processing, numerical and statistical techniques Knowledge of ECSS standards for software development, JDK 1.7 RMI Generics, OO design, distributed processing, numerical programming in Java, JUnit Eclipse Ant, JDBC DBMS interaction, subversion and large Databasesdata processing 1TB Basic educational or workacquired knowledge of astronomyphysics and standard numerical methods and techniques would be a strong asset Experience working with large data volumes, ICDs, data dictionaries would be an asset Experience in interacting with the science community would be an advantage Fluency in English is mandatory. Heshe will be involved in the design and development of GMV commercial SW for satellite control centres for different customers. A Software Quality Engineer Vacancy has arisen with Astrium in Stevenage. The Software Quality Engineer SQE will be responsible for ensuring that the software project products and processes are performed in accordance with the plans and applicable standards, on behalf of the Project Manager. Typical tasks include Definition of the quality objectives and the Project Software Quality Assurance Baseline, producing the applicable Software Quality Assurance Plan, Project Standards and Quality Operational Procedures. The Central Engineering technical unit for Data Processing, On Board Software Dependability comprises departments in UK, France and Germany. The function of the technical unit is to provide a central competence that meets the evolving needs of the business, working on satellite platforms, payloads and equipment. The UK department is responsible for the resourcing and technical management of the Functional Validation FV aspects of the Earth Observation, Navigation and Science ENS satellite projects. It relates to all activities set in place for verifying and validating a system from a functional point of view. Specifically this means integration of avionics equipment, tests engineering, writingchecking up procedures, production of the test procedures, investigation of anomalies. The Candidate is required to understand and handle the avionics tests set up with real hardware equipment andor simulator. The FV activity is based on a consistent use of simulation models and facilities, databases and procedures throughout all project phases, so as to achieve a consistent process for harmonised development and Validation of satellite hardware and software, checkout software and checkout equipment. Process Improvement initiatives are being constantly performed to make the FV more efficient and consistent across the various projects. The key responsibilities of the role are as follows Testing Tasks The successful candidate will initially join one of the ENS projects as part of the Functional Verification team and, after an initial period of training, will be participating in the preparation, implementation and execution of functional tests on simulated and realtime test benches. Tests will cover the following subsystems Attitude and Orbit Control AOCS, Data Handling DHS, Failure Detection and Incident Recovery FDIR, Payload and System Control. The role will also involve working on support activities, for instance anomaly resolution and management, configuration control, process improvement. Tasks include Establish the necessary and sufficient configuration to perform the Functional Validation task. Validation of the functional chains through end to end open loop tests AOCS, DHS, ... Validate the nominal and reconfiguration functions of the subassembly through closed loop tests The development and debug of Automated Test Procedures ATP and scripts, in ELISA language, working within a specified process and utilisation of Templates and FV Tools against a test specification this will include liaison with the various project architects and domain specialists. Execution of the ATPs on the various test benches together with test data analysis and Test Report Compilation this will include liaison with specialist areas for result data analysis, technical management and Product Assurance PA. Investigation of anomalies and diagnosis determination of root cause equipment, environment model, software flight, test bed, data bases, procedures, tests specifications. Process Improvement The candidate should expect to be involved in managing process improvements typically these tasks will include the liaison with other departments, management of the task, definition and implementation of the improvement. The process Improvements will be in Liaison with the various Project teams, architects and specialists.
