For the location in Darmstadt, Germany we are looking for a Data Processing System Applications Engineer at EUMETSAT. Tasks As a member of the SEP Data Processing System Applications and Tools Group and in particular the Supporting Applications Engineering team, the Key Person shall support the maintenance and evolution of off line Ground Segment elements, specifically for Quality control, calibration and validation, data visualisation and auxiliary data management and services. Typically tasks will include Contribute to the definition, design, implementation and maintenance of architectures for data processing ground segments and their components with special emphasis on product quality control, calibration and validation, production monitoring and reporting. Support the operations of existing data processing ground segments and their maintenance and evolution. This will also include Upgrade software, including implementing and maintaining new algorithms for product quality control and calibrationvalidation activities. Perform routine tasks in operational systems under configuration control such as Support the Configuration Management process and the building and distribution of software releases and patches Support to the development, integration and configuration management of Software developed by third parties, its installation, and configuration and testing Anomaly investigations, documentation and classification. Follow up of the delivery of SW resolutions for these anomalies Perform standard SW engineering activities such as SW testing in a structured approach to verify that delivered SW is fulfilling the requirements or to demonstrate that problems have been corrected. SW integration and verification in the EUMETSAT ground segments Settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, Support to the procurement and installation of software, and the coordination with external providers of support services Participation in meetings and formal reviews. Essential requirements In addition to having a University degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, the Key Person shall have experience in system design, SW development, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of large complex realtime data processing systems for meteorological satellites. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in the following areas is mandatory Experience of operating and maintaining software systems in a UNIX based Environment specifically LINUX and AIX CC programming language experience in a UNIX based environment Use of and application programming of database systems in particular ORACLE, INFORMIX, PostgreSQL and MySQL Competence in the use of scripting languages e.g., shell scripting and highLevel languages e.g., Python, Java Knowledge of web technologies, programming and markup languages e.g. Apache, CGI, JavaScript, UML Competence in SW testing, unit test suite maintenance, automated testing, verification and validation. Desirable requirements Practical knowledge of as many as possible of the following areas will be an advantage Experience in system design for quality control and calval systems Experience with operational Earth Observation science data processing Data visualisation tools, e.g. IDL, ENVI Familiarity with data formats used for meteorological satellite products Experience in using Python libraries and tools, such as Matplotlib, NumPy, Django and accessing sql databases from Python Knowledge of relevant Standards, Quality Assurance and Configuration Management principles and applications Very good technical writing skills, in particular in the area of formal technicaldocumentation, e.g. design documentation, test procedures, maintenance procedures Competence in the exploitation of modern hardware and operating systems at the application level e.g., multithreading, parallel programming e.g. MPI, OpenMP, virtualization Competence in objectoriented software design and implementation in the context of satellite instrument data processing systems. In order to demonstrate advanced technology for teleoperation of robotic systems on Ground from Space, the ESA Telerobotics Haptics Laboratory develops advanced haptic user interfaces for astronaut crew. For these devices, a range of highly customized subcomponents are being developed that require embedded software and hardware developments.
