Qualcomm awarded USD 31 mln in damages in Apple patent infringement suit

(Telecompaper) Qualcomm announced that a jury in the US District Court for the Southern District of California found that the Apple iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and X infringe two Qualcomm patents, and the Apple iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X also infringe a third patent. The jury awarded Qualcomm USD 31 million in damages for infringement of the patents from July 2017, when the lawsuit was filed, through the end of the trial.
OneWeb raises USD 1.25 billion for global satellite network

(Telecompaper) OneWeb has raised another USD 1.25 billion to further its project to create a global satellite internet network. Its largest fundraising round to date brings the total funds raised to USD 3.4 billion. This round was led by SoftBank Group, Grupo Salinas, Qualcomm Technologies and the government of Rwanda.

Verizon starts pre-sales of 5G moto mod, plans USD 10 charge for unlimited 5G data

(Telecompaper) Verizon announced that it will start pre-sales of the 5G Moto Mod from 14 March. First announced last year, the mod clips on to the Moto Z3 smartphone to make it work over 5G networks. The launch comes as Verizon prepares to start 5G mobile services in the first half of 2019, with Chicago and Minneapolis announced as the first cities for the service.
Nvidia buys Mellanox for USD 6.9 bln

(Telecompaper) Nvidia has agreed to buy Mellanox for USD 125 per share in cash, translating into a total value of USD 6.9 billion. The companies together will power over 250 of the world's top 500 supercomputers, and serve just about every major cloud service provider and computer maker. Upon completion, the deal is expected to immediately add to Nvidia adjusted earnings, gross margin and free cash flow. The company added that it will also keep its capital return programme for the rest of fiscal 2020.
SoftBank unveils USD 5 bln Latin American startup fund

(Telecompaper) At the same time, SoftBank is setting up a new operating group called the SoftBank Latin America Local Hub, which will partner with companies that are already in SoftBank's investment portfolio to help them enter the region. The group's Chief Operating Officer and former Sprint and Brightstar CEO Marcelo Claure has been named CEO of SoftBank Latin America and will be tasked with overseeing the new fund, its investments and operations. No decision has yet been made as to the location of the new fund's HQ, said SoftBank.
