One of our space clients in Germany is looking for an MTG User Preparation Consultancy Support. The Consultant shall support the MTG user preparation activities through coordination of the MTG User Preparation Project. Additionally, they will support some of the user engagement activities identified in this Project. The consultant will be part of the User Support Team and will work with experts across and partners organisations. The submission deadline for applicants is 11th January 2015. Tasks Maintain the MTG User Preparation Project plan and associated documentation and schedule related activities. Collect and collate project inputs from all internal stakeholders. Arrange and attend regular MTG User Preparation Project team meetings and prepare meeting reports as required. Record and monitor any open actions associated with the MTG User Preparation Project. Keep abreast of guidelines issued by the WMO regarding user readiness activities for next generation satellites and prepare inputs and followup actions as required. Qualifications University degree in relevant discipline, preferably in remote sensing, meteorology or environmental sciences. Experience Proven experience in project coordination or a project management role. Experience in remote sensing related to meteorological observation needs. Experience in preparing and maintaining information for users. Experience in using project planning tools like MS Project or similar. Experience of working in partnership across organisational boundaries. At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in relevant disciplines. Previous experience supporting user preparation activities in the Earth Observation arena. Any work with the meteorological user community, in particular national weather services. Fluency in English is mandatory and a working knowledge of French would be a significant advantage.

Job description For our customer, EUMETSAT in Darmstadt, Germany, we are seeking an Lightning Imager data processing consultant to support the Meteosat Third Generation MTG programme. The MTG system will include three satellites, two MTGI imaging satellites and one MTGS sounder satellite. Each MTGI will have an imaging radiometer, the Flexible Combined Imager FCI, and a lightning detection instrument, the Lightning Imager LI. The MTG LI instrument is based on detecting short transient events against a dark night time or bright day time background. The detected events are registered by the LI instrument when something resembling a lightning signal has been detected. The triggered event can be a real lightning event or a false event. A false event is defined as a LI triggered event occurring in the absence of a lightning optical pulse, which may have a range of causes including spacecraft motion microvibrations, space environment particle transients protons, heavy ions, etc., electronics noise, thermo mechanical noise, and solar glint. The onground data processing for the LI instrument is split in 2 steps the Level 01b data processing from raw instrument data into geophysically calibrated data and the Level 12 data processing into data products for the LI data users groups, flashes, etc.. The Level 01b data processing includes various correction steps algorithms related to corrections for detector effects, electronic effects, radiometric effects, quality flagging aspects, as well as algorithms related to triggered event filtering flagging and Image Navigation and Registration INR geolocation. Responsibilities In general, the tasks will be towards the provision of support to the LI onground data processing development, with a strong emphasis on all the 01b data processing aspects. You will be integrated into the Instrument Functional Chain Engineering IFCE group of the MTG System Engineering team, and report to the LI instrument system engineer. You will also work closely together with people from the Remote Sensing and Products Division RSP within EUMETSAT that work on the LI. Your activities will include support to the MTG programme for the LI instrument in the following areas Support the development and evaluation of detector, electronic, radiometric, quality flagging, performance and calibration degradation correction and monitoring algorithms detector, electronics and optical and all other algorithms relevant for the LI 01b data processing. For INR geolocation algorithmssupport from LI side towards algorithms provided by other sources is anticipated Support the development and evaluation of appropriate LI triggered event filtering flagging algorithms for 01b and 12 data processing, with emphasis on the 01b data processing Support the development of prototype software code for the purposes of testing and verification of the developed LI 01b algorithms Support the development of a reference processor for LI, from level0 to level1b, within EUMETSAT Provision of an Algorithm Theoretical Baseline Document ATBD for the LI 01b processing Support to the generation of associated documentation including technical reports, etc. Participation in the LI Instrument Functional Chain Engineering IFCE group Conducting and supporting external studies relevant for and related to the above activities, and analysing and evaluating the study results. Note Evaluation of algorithms involves both the review of the information derived from the ESA led LI space segment contract and alternative sources of information. This is a fulltime position with a planned starting date in Q1 2016. You will be nominally based at EUMETSATs facilities in Darmstadt, Germany, but travel within Europe may be required for certain tasks. Qualifications Competencies In addition to having a technical university degree in Physics or a related subject for example space and satellite engineering, you shall be in possession of the following mandatory skills Demonstrable familiarity with satellite instruments characteristics for Earth observation in the visiblenear infrared range of the spectrum and with their Level 01b calibration, as well as with relating physics processes in such satellite instruments to the relevant Level 01b data processing algorithms required to provide geophysically calibrated level1b data Solid background in software engineering Capable of working both individually and independently on assigned responsibilities, as well as in the LI MTG team where necessary Ability to write concise and comprehensive scientific and technical reports Good interpersonal and communication skills Fluency in English spoken and written is mandatory, as English is the working language.
