As you probably know by now, the PS4 is essentially a $400 PC. It has an x86 PC CPU, a standard PC GPU, and the same kind of RAM that you'd find on a PC graphics card. There are a few custom chips on the PS4's motherboard, but for the most part it's just a normal PC with some custom software. This led me to wonder... could you actually build a comparable PC for $400? More importantly, given how Sony has crippled the PS4's home theatre functionality, is it possible to build a PC for $400 that is actually better for games and as a living room media box?

Over the weekend, Sony broke two records: Over one million PS4s were sold in the first 24 hours of availability -- but on the other hand, it seems a huge number of those consoles were dead-on-arrival bricks. Sony's customer service department will replace these broken consoles, but due to the dearth of stock in North America, early adopters are being told that they may have to wait months for a replacement PS4. Why are so many PS4s DOA? Is this the second act of the Xbox 360 red ring of death saga, or is it something altogether more complex?

The Battlefield 4 team is offering an upgrade option for players who buy the game on a last-gen console but want access to the full version, but there are snags and limitations. If you game mostly to play with a specific group of people, you may want to hold off until more of them buy into the new consoles.
