Xbox One costs more to make than the PS4, thanks to ESRAM and Kinect
2013-11-26 22:27:37| Extremetech
If you bought an Xbox One for $500, rest assured that you got a good deal: It cost Microsoft $471 to make the Xbox One, new Kinect, and everything else in the box. After the retailers' cut, Microsoft loses money on every Xbox One sold. At $471, the Xbox One costs about $90 more than the PS4 -- a cost difference that is almost entirely down to the new Kinect, which costs around $75 to make.

We've spent a lot of time comparing the PS4 and Xbox One in terms of hardware specs, software, and games -- but one thing we haven't discussed is their engineering. Physically, the Xbox One and PS4 are very different consoles: While the Xbox is huge and boxy, the PS4 is much slimmer and lighter. Furthermore, despite being thinner and lighter, the PS4 has an integrated PSU, while the Xbox One has a separate power brick. Is Sony simply superior to Microsoft when it comes to industrial design and engineering?

2013-11-21 15:27:54| Extremetech
One of Sony's biggest selling points with the PS4 is the Remote Play functionality available with every title. If you own a PlayStation Vita, PS4 games can be played remotely over ad-hoc WiFi connections, local wireless networks, or even the internet. I've had surprisingly solid results with the first two options, so I decided it was time to test Remote Play over the internet. While there were a few speed bumps along the way, the process ended up being incredibly straight-forward.
