The Key person shall work in the TSS Department as a member of the Competence Area for Computer and Storage CSM in the Generic Systems and Infrastructure Division GSI supporting programs and routine operations. TASKS As a member of a Computer and Storage Management Team, the Key Person shall provide support to the development and maintenance of storage systems with special focus on archive and retrieval services. The duties include the administration and operation of the central archive systems, maintenance of the external storage, inventory and support to the operation of the storage services. The Key person shall perform the following tasks monitoring of the facility services, storage, backup and archive performance, investigation into HW and SW problems and performance of the relevant corrective actions ensuring that in case of HW or SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition and maintenance of backuparchive procedures liaison with the external providers of HW and SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions analysis, planning and performance of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between storage subsystems implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of associated technical documentation provision of support to design future evolution of the facility to accommodate the requirements of current and future programs, generation and maintenance of associated documentation provision of standbyoncall support provision of support, as required, to critical operations. In the performance of the activities the Key person shall always apply the relevant change management control and maintenance procedures. PROFILE In addition to having a university degree or equivalent, the Key person shall have minimum of 5 years experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed storage systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterized by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and based on high availability requirements. Technical skills, experience knowledge The Key person shall have an expert knowledge and an extensive work experience in the Storage solutions, Storage Area Networks SAN, BackupArchive technologies and should have demonstrated experience, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with the design and implementation of the following highly available system and software environments SAN topology, managing Brocade or equivalent Directors and departmental switches Storage virtualization solutions EMC VPLEX or equivalent serving many different types of storage client platforms Enterprise and Departmental storage solutions EMC VMAX, HDS or equivalent file, block or object base Big Data storage solutions Automation of storage services provision, Cloud Storage, Data Analytics Generation and maintenance of technical documentation in English Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the Key Person to have experience with the following Implementation of archive solutions using Hierarchical Storage Management HSM system SAMFS or equivalent High end, automated, tape library systems StorageTek SL8500 series with ACSLS software Implementation of backup and recovery solutions Symantec Netbackup or equivalent SystemService Monitoring using Nagios framework The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills. The Key person shall prepare, coordinate and communicate in advance and in detail critical activities, to be shared for review and approval prior to the actual execution of the work. The Key person shall be able to conduct all activities in an orderly and disciplined manner, shall be able to work in a team and share expertise and experience with other team members, and shall be able to work calmly and correctly under stress. The working language for the position is English and therefore the key person must be able to work effectively in this language. Computer Systems Engineer for Herschel Science Operations

Aurora is an established supplier of skilled manpower to ESA and in particular at ESTEC and ESAC. Aurora has the opportunity to expand our support within the Science and Robotic Exploration Directorate DSRE. Aurora currently has a team of 20 engineers and scientists at ESAC including support to Herschel. We require a service to be provided by a parttime circa 50 software engineer with experience in system administration and support, preferably in a science operations environment. ESA will award the work to the company with the best proposal and Auroras existing experience on providing support to the Computer Support Group CSG and the Herschel mission is beneficial to our commitment to produce an excellent proposal to ESA. Overview The work is to provide a number of specialised services to support ESA in Computer Systems Engineering at ESAC for the operations of the Herschel Science Centre HSC. The Herschel Space Observatory was launched in May 2009. It performed astronomical photometry and spectroscopy in the far infrared and submillimetre 57670 micron wavelength range. Its scientific payload consisted of three instruments using a variety of detector technologies developed by Principal Investigator teams at various institutions, predominantly in Europe but with a significant contribution from the US. The majority of its observing time was provided to the general user community, via annual Calls for Proposals. Since May 2013, the Herschel spacecraft has had no liquid helium coolant remaining to allow the science instruments on board to operate, hence regular operations have ceased and the spacecraft has been placed into a nonreturning Solar orbit. In the ongoing postoperations phase, the Herschel Science Centre HSC, located at ESAC, is, inter alia, responsible for supporting data analysis improvements, oversight of the calibration and crosscalibration of the science instruments, and the generation of standard science products and their quality assessment as final Herschel archive products. All observational data has been systematically processed to generate these products that are distributed to the astronomical community via the Herschel Science Archive HSA, developed and maintained at ESAC. With the complete set of data from mission operations now in hand it is possible to further improve the calibration and data products in the archive. The SREO Computer Support Group CSG is providing computer support to all science operations centres and science ground segments located at ESAC, either in development or in operational phase. Under this work package, service shall be provided to support ESA in system administration activities for those computer systems used for science operations and research activities. These computers are general servers or workstations mainly based on Linux and Oracle Solaris, Macintoshes, Technical PCs and for Office Automation activities. The environment also includes Disk Storage infrastructure, Virtual infrastructure as well as GRID and Cloud computing infrastructures. Systems can be physical machines or provided through virtual infrastructure. These systems are connected to networks organized by functions operational, office and development, external services, GRID, Cloud and administration networks. Specific tasks would include installation, configuration, deployment, integration, monitoring, administration and maintenance of these computer systems, scientific and commercial software installation and administration, data backup and retrieval, interface with IT vendors for quotation, installation and maintenance agreements, users IT support, defining and operating computers operational procedures, hardware inventory tracking. It specifically excludes ESA corporate informatics infrastructure services office automation, network, terminal servers, Lotus Notes, LAN and communications, which are provided and subject to separate Service Level Agreements SLA. Specific Service tasks a UNIX LINUX and SOLARIS, Macintosh and PC System management Installation, configuration, integration and setting up of new machines with appropriate operating systems and layered software. Administration and operation management of computer systems. System security management. System upgrades, both physical and logical. User support mainly scientists and engineers Handle the mail aliases and mail distribution list. Handlingcheckingmodifying all backups. Definition, implementation and maintenance of computer operators procedures. Issues of documentation and technical reports. b GRID related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Grid Engine Support users to adapt their computing tasks to the GRID infrastructure c Cloud related activities Installation, configuration, integration, operations, maintenance and upgrade of Eucalyptus Cloud middleware Knowledge of other Cloud middleware is an asset d Contact with hardware and software suppliers Definition of hardwaresoftware needs and quotation requests for new purchases and maintenance contracts Locking hardware incidents calls and following the call history. Legal and Security Requirements All applicants must be legally allowed to work in Spain without the need to obtain a work visa. Only European Union citizens can be employed by Aurora in Spain.
