Summary A degree educated experienced science operations engineer with experience of using Java and Jython on a Linux platform is required. Objective The objective of the service support to be provided is to continue development of the Herschel Science Data Processing system by designing, implementing, maintaining, testing and documenting data analysis modules. This software is developed jointly between ESA, the three Herschel instrument teams and the NASA Herschel Science Center, with ESA coordinating the overall development and providing the framework within which the instrument teams can develop and optimise instrumentspecific data reduction algorithms. The Herschel Data Processing System serves both as the basis to generate standard pipeline products and as tool to analyse Herschel data interactively. The Herschel Data Processing System is distributed to the astronomical community. Responsibilities Duties Specific tasks beyond generalpurpose software development include Development and maintenance of the Herschel standard product generation and quality control framework. This framework is used for pipeline data processing for all Herschel data Graphical user interface GUI development and maintenance Development and maintenance of the Herschel Interactive Analysis system. This system is used by the astronomical community to exploit Herschel data in detail Development and maintenance of data structures, including accessing them locally and from object oriented and relational databases Development and maintenance of numerical libraries Setting up and providing access to webservices working in the VO context Writing and maintenance of documentation Provision and maintenance of test harnesses Support of the data processing technical assistants when running the operational environment to generate Herschel standard products. Qualifications Experience A university degree in computer science, physics, electronic engineering, or equivalent is required. For our activities in EUMETSAT, we are currently seeking a UNIX System Software Engineer for the maintenance of the Technical Computing Environment TCE. The Engineer shall work in the Technical and Scientific Support Department Ground Segment Infrastructure Division team, supporting mainly the TCE maintenance and further development. Heshe will be part of a system administration team that is also responsible for all operational systems in EUMETSAT plus the TCE system. Tasks As a member of the Computer Systems Management CSM team, the Engineer shall provide support to the development and maintenance of the TCE. The duties range from the support to the operation of the TCE, to the analysis, design, development, testing and maintenance of distributed hardware and system software platforms. This includes the settingup and implementation of maintenance policies and procedures, the support to the procurement of hardware and software, and the coordination with external providers of maintenance services. The Engineer shall perform the following tasks Installation and configuration of operating system and other software, tuning of operating systems parameters to optimize performance Analysis, planning and carrying out of HW and SW upgrades or reconfigurations, taking care of compatibility issues between subsystems Monitoring of the system performance, investigation into HW and system SW problems and carrying out the relevant corrective actions Provision of firstlevel support to the users of the system Ensuring that in case of HW or system SW failures the operational configuration can be restored, including the definition, maintenance, carrying out of backup procedures Coordination with shared infrastructures, e.g. networks, storage network infrastructure SNI, for operations and maintenance Liaison with the external providers of HW and system SW maintenance for the request and follow up of maintenance interventions Administration and installation of databases Administration of user accounts Support to SW development and maintenance in relation to the utilization of system resources Implementation and maintenance of scripts andor procedures where applicable for the automated andor controlled execution of the above activities, generation or update of technical documentation in relation to system upgrades Provision of standbyoncall support if needed under special circumstances Provision of support, to critical operations as required. Qualifications and Requirements Applicants require a university degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline. Essential The Engineer shall have extensive experience in the administration and troubleshooting of distributed systems. The experience should have been made in an operational or production environment, characterised by custom applications in addition to standard software, running both on the client and server side, and by high availability requirements. The Engineer shall have an expert knowledge and a significant work experience of the UNIX operating systems, and should be familiar, to the extent required by the performance of the above tasks, with as many as possible of the following system software environments IBM computers AIX, configuration of pseries servers, GPFS, TSM backup, NIM DELL computers SuSE Linux andor RedHat Linux Virtualization based on VMWare products Network based on Ethernet EMC RAID arrays and virtual appliances SAN technology TCPIP internetworking and the related network protocols and applications, e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS, SNMP, FTP Sun computers Solaris operating systems. The variety of the tasks and the scope of the systems to be supported require a high degree of autonomy and good analytical skills.
