Spacecraft Operations Engineer ExoMars TTC, communications, Mars data relay operations mf The Mission ExoMars is the European mission to characterise the biological and geochemical environment on Mars in preparation for future robotic missions and human exploration. The mission foresees an ESA provided orbiter in 2016 and a Rover in 2018. The Orbiter will be launched in 2016. Following a 9 months cruise it will go into Mars Orbit and perform an initial orbital science phase for one Martian year. Subsequently the orbiter will be the prime source for relay communications for the 2018 Rover and following missions. The Rover Mission will be launched in 2018, transported and deployed to the surface of Mars by NASA provided assets. The Orbiter will be operated from ESOC in Darmstadt, while the Rover will be operated by remote centres under ESAs responsibility. ESOC will also be responsible for the overall mission coordination and communications. The spacecraft control system will be based on SCOS2000 with the support from the ESA and NASA deep space ground station network. The Challenge We are looking for a skilled Spacecraft Operations Engineer to be part of the team providing spacecraft operations engineering services to the Solar and Planetary Missions Division of ESAESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, with initial assignment to the ExoMars 2016 mission. Initially, the main areas of responsibility for this position are TTC, Communications and Data Relay platform subsystems Preparation, validation and maintenance of the internal and external interfaces for Mars data relay operations. This is a full time position, located at ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany, starting in January 2015. Your Qualifications Applicants shall have an university degree, preferably in aerospace, electronics or physics or other suitable qualification. Essential skills are Previous experience in spacecraft platform subsystem operations Operational experience with interplanetary missions Understanding of spacecraft Flight Control Team tasks and responsibilities, both pre and postlaunch Fluency in English, both in speech and writing Ability to coordinate and interact with other service providers in operations and other fields Ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Desirable skills are Strong educational background in an engineering or science discipline Handson experience with ground systems and facilities required to support spacecraft operations Familiarity with the ESOC environment Operational experience with TTC subsystems, space data relay and indirect spacecraft operations concepts Previous experience with mission planning processes The ability to multitask efficiently working on multiple activities, multiple subsystems and if applicable multiple missions simultaneously. You may also be requested to take responsibility and perform activities for additional spacecraft subsystems or systems within the scope of spacecraft operations engineering. Working time is normal office hours, with the engineer providing oncall support outside normal working hours. Occasional travel within Europe may be required. The objective of the Spacecraft Operations Shift Engineer is the preparation, validation and execution of operations related to the data handling, TTC and payload subsystems in a 247 shift pattern. The main tasks of the position will be Preparation of Flight Operations Procedures FOP Writing of procedures Adaptation of procedures to new databases and procedures delivered by industry Definition of validation scenarios FOP validation, testing and result reporting Preparation of and participation in SCTs and simulations Test and validation of operational items like CSIM, ASW, ODB, SCCF and MOIS Participation in and provision of training spacecraft subsystems, Ops tools, Ops concepts Anomaly reports handling writing, action processing, support of review boards Operations support 247 satellite monitoring and control in routine operations shift team tasks 247 execution of special and contingency operations during PF Commissioning, IOT and routine phase Offline analysis of the subsystem performance Contingency Flight Operations on Flying Satellites Reporting definition and set up of reports and trend analysis Data Base tuning Routine special OPS and satellite maintenance Required qualifications and work experience A Master Degree in Aerospace Engineering or in an equivalent discipline Proven experience in SC operations Knowledge of the GALILEO project Willing to work in a 247 shift environment Spacecraft subsystem knowledge, in particular good knowledge of Data Handling and TTC and Payload subsystems Experience with prelaunch activities and launch campaigns Additional skills required Systemminded and a team player Very good social skills Able to work in an interdisciplinary team Selfstarter, able to work independently with little or no supervision Fluent in English, both in speech and writing German language skills would be an asset Benefits A permanent employment contract.
